George Wyche Essays (209 words) - Ancient Greek Philosophy
George Wyche Susan Sontag In Plato's Cave from the book: On Photography Within this paper is a different outlook on photography, Susan in her thesis statement proposes that when piled up into a film that the photos themselves lose their collectable aspect rather than if they were compiled together in a book. She later states that looking a one single image holds a visual tangibility and has a big emotional impact as well. Susan brings up David Hill and Julia Cameron who took photos in the min set that they were capturing paintings but in a broader spectrum so that they could include a larger number of subjects. Susan includes a lot about the history of physicality of actually taking an image. In the early days there weren't per say professional photographers, so people had to invent the rules and figure things out for themselves. She concludes with saying that in todays age that photography has progressed so much that everything is in picture form. I agree with the old form of picture taking, that it was laborious and took thought and directive to captur e art. I love the rawness of it and I try to convey the old ways of picture taking in my art and the pictures that I take.

Euthenasia essays
Euthenasia essays Euthanasia is also known as mercy killing, but it is hard-core murder. Killing is killing, it cannot be justified as mercy killing or killing out of compassion. Taking another human life is plain wrong, and there cannot be any exceptions whatsoever. The act of euthanasia proves to the society that life is not precious and can be ended just like that. Terminally ill patients, rather than giving up and killing themselves, should spend time with their families and doing things that they want to do. The patients should let nature take its course and not await death; rather they should enjoy and live life to the fullest, so they wont have any regrets. Euthanasia is not a safe or respectable practice and it should remain illegal, not just in Canada, but in other parts of the world. Life is a sacred gift. If a society loses its belief that life is a gift, the life in that culture will be meaningless and death will be at a very cheap cost. The Doctors in Nazi Germany did not believe that life was a sacred gift. They began authorizing euthanasia for mentally ill and deformed individuals. From mentally ill and deformed people, they started authorizing euthanasia for the undesirables. Soon, they were able to justify the extermination of six million Jews, Poles, Evangelicals, and other that seemed expendable by Hitlers Third Reich. If a society feels that it is right to end life because it is not the quality that they want it to be, soon they will be justifying other atrocities by cloaking it with masks of compassion and realism. Even patients suffering from diseases that can be cured by euthanasia are speaking out against the act. Janice Elsner, a patient suffering from a progressing muscular dystrophy, believes that life is a gift no matter what the situation. A ssisted suicide is sending the opposite message that if someone is becoming an inconvenience or a burden, they can just ...

Why do you think Fr. Lawton says the journey to be oneself seems the Essay - 3
Why do you think Fr. Lawton says the journey to be oneself seems the riskiest of all journeys What risks lie ahead in your college career as you embark on th - Essay Example Choosing friends with a degree of discrimination, such as those who share the same priorities as I is essentially accomplished by the same methodology as in high school. Nervous anticipation is probably the best description for the feeling, meeting new people from far-off places, hoping my background either matches or complements theirs. Leaving the protective and structured home-life is the greatest adjustment, at least for me; therefore, the most frightening because the pitfalls related to the unknown are the largest and easiest to fall into. Everyone knows at least an overview of a similar story which was related to me by my parents on many occasions. Many want to get as far away from their parents and home town as possible and others want the security home provides while being allowed to make their own choices, in other words, to have their cake and eat it to. Finally the day comes when they leave the nest to embark on the great adventure that is life. Nearly to a person, once they have flown, they lament about the carefree days of childhood when there were no bills to pay, were not forced to discipline themselves and if a problem arose, they could just call mom or dad and they would magically fix it. Instead of having to grudgingly get up every morning to an annoying alarm bell and eat cold pizza for breakfast, as children, mother came in, opened up the drapes then returned as often as need to gently awaken you as the smell of a hot, nutritious breakfast tempted you to life. Freedom is a two-edged sword, a fact of lif e that is generally shockingly discovered only after leaving home. Living away from home is great but it has its downsides as well. That first month away from home is truly a liberating feeling. You can to whatever you want on a whim and have to answer to no one. You can eat ice cream for breakfast at the crack of noon when you wake, come home when the party is over for a change and watch whatever disgusting

Comparing Biblical and Denominational Christianity Research Paper
Comparing Biblical and Denominational Christianity - Research Paper Example Both types of belief systems ascribe to the basic Christian tenets, but the way in which they develop traditions and interconnections to each other through frameworks of belief, are constructed upon differing forms of guidance. In understanding the differences between Biblical Christianity and denominational Christianity, systems of belief must be examined and interpreted through meanings and from where those meanings are developed. Interpretation is the foundation of how the Bible is received, however. The Bible was written in languages with meanings that have changed, and has been translated into the common modern tongue of every written language. Therefore, the translation is used to determined interpretation. As an example, the shortened comment ââ¬Å"spare the rod, spoil the childâ⬠is often used as biblical wisdom, but this phrase is a shortened version of several in the Bible. One of the verses that this phrase comes from the section that states ââ¬Å"he who spares the rod, hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him (New International Version Bible: Proverbs 13:24). The word for ââ¬Ërodââ¬â¢ is ââ¬Ëshebetââ¬â¢, which is a reference to the Hebrew for shepherdââ¬â¢s staff. The staff was not used to beat the sheep, but to guide them and to fend off predators when the sheep were vulnerable (Nicholson and Parker 217). As an example, the shortened comment ââ¬Å"spare the rod, spoil the childâ⬠is often used as biblical wisdom, but this phrase is a shortened version.... The problem with the concept of Biblical Christianity is that it still depends on the interpretations of someone within the group in order to create beliefs and meaning. The belief in the superiority that is assigned by claiming to only use the Bible as a resource for worship is the first belief that connects the members of the groups. All aspects of life are informed through the wisdom that is provided in the Bible, with agreements on interpretation being taken as absolutes. Some interpretations of Biblical Christianity are based upon the idea that the beliefs are developed through believing what the Bible says and not making adjustments for the state of modern life. The concept of heresy is determined through assessing beliefs that are outside of the bible wisdoms, that are ââ¬Å"held in opposition to the commonly received doctrine and tending to promote division or dissentionâ⬠(Ridenour 15). Therefore, whatever falls outside of what is believed by those who adhere to Biblic al wisdom is considered heresy. Therefore, in believing that the form of Christianity that is being practiced is Biblical is to believe that all of the interpretations made by the group adhere to strict and literal references to the Bible. Another example can be found in Timothy I. The statement that ââ¬Å"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modes apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety: not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;â⬠has been used to control the dress of women in some Christian groups (King James Version, I Timothy 2:9). In literal form, this suggests that wearing such items is an affront to God. However, once again, when put into context,

Movie vs books Essay Example for Free
Movie vs books Essay From our mouths, to writing and finally to film, the way we tell stories has evolved over time and I must say thank God for its advancements. Reading a book can be nice but thanks to movies all the work of deciphering the message of the story is done through the director of the motion picture. He is responsible for researching the story to find the intent of the writers and will often consult with the writer to bring you the true meaning of the story. The director brings the story to life on screen with words, images, and sounds, leaving little to wonder, taking out the questions of what the story is about and leaving us with little or no debate. Examples of this can be seen in the Hollywood productions of the movies ââ¬Å"Holesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Great Gatsbyâ⬠. The movie Holes (2003) was directed by Andrew Davis who used the writer of Holes, Louis Sacher as a consultant on the set during production (Movie Hole Interview October 6, 2003). The movie follows the life of a boy, Stanley, who due to a family curse, ends up in a juvenile detention center out in the middle of nowhere after being falsely accused of stealing shoes. A witch has placed a curse on Stanleyââ¬â¢s family causing this turn of events; the curse canââ¬â¢t be removed until he completes certain tasks for his best friend. At the detention center he is brought together by fate with a boy named Zero who will become his best friend. Through trials and tribulations he and his friend are able to stay united, break the family curse, and get out of the juvenile detention center. Holes was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I have also read the book, I believe the movie follows the storyline of the book down to its minutest details. The movie provided all of the key factors that the book Holes was trying to convey, and in comparing the two I was almost stunned at the realization that the two were one in the same. The movie gives the reader and viewer the same theme time and time again throughout the story; friends will get you through the day, and stick to your goals. The Great Gatsby is another movie that Iââ¬â¢m sure many people are familiar with and the story is one I myself have fallen in love with. Like holes I have also read the book that was based on the most recent Great Gatsby (2013) movie remake by director Baz Luhrmann. It is a marvelous movie that evokes a personââ¬â¢s passion, yet wills you to move on past lost love. In the movie we follow the narrator who takes us into the world of Gatsby, a Debonair Millionaire. From watching the movie we may conclude that everything Gatsby does throughout the story is for a woman name Daisy, whom is in love with and desires. To impress her he throws luxurious parties and to be closer to her he buys a mansion across the bay from her. Unfortunately due to his misplaced love, a love that should have been for God, he moves to corruption and swindling to attain his love, alas the only love he receives is the one who loves all, Death. Director, Baz Luhrmann tells the New York Times (May 9, 2013) ââ¬Å"That he sticks close to the details of the story and lifts dialogue and description directly from the novelsâ⬠. In doing so he is helping to provide us with a view of the story that the writer envisioned. Yet personal interpretation can be a problem within itself when comparing a movie to a book. While there is normally one message you can take away from a movie, with a book readers are able to decipher messages differently possibly coming to a conclusion the author never intended in the first place. Take the book 50 shades of Grey, which is rumored to be a movie soon, while discussing it with several women I have gotten several different interpretations of its meaning. Many saw the book as a romance novel with a main character that falls deeply in love. While some saw the main character as a scary control freak who liked to beat up his women. As for myself, I took it as a trashy love story reminding us of things we all secretly wish for, like the change to be a millionaire and to have incredible sex. So in conclusion, I can say with certainty that movies are the media in todayââ¬â¢s society that can create a clear and concise message closely delivering what the writer had intended for its audience. While books can tell a story and allow the reader to use their imagination when determining the message of the writer we are often unsure about what message the writer was truly trying to convey when we finish the book. Movies provide us with words, sights and sounds that give us a clearer picture as to what the writer is trying to tell us. When we finish watching a movie we are left with little room for interpretation or argument and when we leave the theater we are satisfied that we have a good understanding of the writers true message was.

Stem Cell Research :: Controversy, Debate, Politics
Stem cells are cells that can form into any type of cell, they are found in bone marrow, embryos, fetuses, and blood from the umbilical cord. Early in development, a human embryo is made up of a hollow ball of cells called a ââ¬Å"blastocystâ⬠. Blastocyst cells divide and eventually develop into all of the tissues and organs of a human being, a process called ââ¬Å"differentiationâ⬠. Embryonic stem cells can be grown in the laboratory from blastocysts and made to differentiate into nerve, liver, muscle, blood, and other cells. Scientists hope to control the differentiation of the cells to replace cells in diseased organs in human beings. Embryonic stem cells can also be used to test the effects of new drugs without harming animals or people. In adult human beings, stem cells are found in many places in the body, including the skin, liver, bone marrow, and muscles. In the organs, stem cells remain inactive until they are needed. The stem cells supply each organ with cells needed to replace damaged or dead cells. Bone marrow stem cells divide to produce more stem cells, additional cells called ââ¬Å"precursor cellsâ⬠, and all of the different cells that make up the blood and immune system. Precursor cells have the ability to form many different types of cells, but they cannot produce more stem cells. Scientists can isolate bone marrow stem cells to use as donor cells in transplants. Adult stem cells, however, are rare and more difficult to detect and isolate. The discovery and isolation of embryonic stem cells has led to debate over whether it is right to use cells taken from human embryos for research. People have expressed concern about using human embryos and collecting some of their cells. Some people consider embryos already to be human beings. The embryos are destroyed in the process of isolating the stem cells. Once removed from an embryo, stem cells alone cannot form another embryo or develop into a human being. Many people consider it wrong to destroy human embryos, but other people believe that the potential medical benefits of stem cells justify their use. Scientists have found that stem cells can grow into 210 types of cells in the human body. Scientists believe that these cells can be used to cure many diseases that they have tried to find a cure for. Reflection: David and Goliath
David and Goliath In the excerpt we read from David and Goliath, the main focus in the chapter was the theory of ââ¬Å"Big fish, Small pondâ⬠. The basis of the theory is that why throw a kid into a hard environment when he can excel in a moderate environment. This often applies to Education. I qualify with this statement; I see both benefits to it and restraints. If you put a kid in an average environment, for example, putting a over qualified kid in a college prep English class. You would expect him to be the smartest kid in the class, answering all the questions and scoring well on all the tests. He would be the star and people would recognize his excellence. But what good is that? Is that more beneficial than taking the higher-level course? And is it possible he will settle and not apply himself accordingly. If he took the AP or B class, it would be more of a challenge for him or her, as it would for anyone else. It would challenge him or her to think critically and probably cause them to work harder. But it would risk him or her Just being an average student, not standing out in the class. But then again, is that really as important as it seems? Or does Just having the AP credit more reliable? This theory is also very prevalent In the college enrollment process. Lots of people choose between the diploma and the opportunity. Lets say you go to Harvard and you graduate with a good GAP, but got no recognition for your works. Now picture going to ASS or U of A, definitely not as perennial as Harvard, but In your stay here, you separate yourself from the rest and people began to recognize your ability.Whiffs to say which ones better? I believe there Is no correct answer, It matters what you do with the opportunities put In front of you. By anonymously reliable? This theory is also very prevalent in the college enrollment process.
